The brief for this project allowed me to explore different image-making techniques such as painting. I started with watercolour painting sunflower petals in both yellow and orange. With the body of the petals working, I used a sponge brush to create the inside ‘seed’ part of the flower to give the painting texture.
Putting the flowers into Photoshop, I was able to work on the composition of the flower bunch to best suit the poster size. I changed the orientation and brightness/contrast of the flowers to create a greater depth of field giving the image a dynamic and organic look. I paired the image with a simple sans-serif font which complements to image composition by not drawing the eye away from the flowers, becoming secondary.
I decided to create tickets that would be sold for the festival using the identity I had created on the poster. The use of cropping and scale was helpful in designing the ticket with the use of colour also playing its part in resulting in an organic sunflower field aesthetic-looking ticket.
Overall, I created a dynamic playful design that works to draw audience attention and promotes the Kalbar Sunflower Festival successfully.
